FDR’s “Four Freedoms” speech outlined his vision for a world in which all people have the essential freedoms of speech, worship, want and fear. Over 80 years later, we are still struggling to achieve those goals.
In our country today, with ICE thugs terrorizing even children and peaceful protesters, and with a president seeking revenge and retribution, we are no longer free from fear.
Nearly 36 million Americans live in extreme poverty. Due to high costs and stagnant wages, approximately 62% to 69% live paycheck to paycheck. The bottom 50% possess only 2.5% of the nation’s wealth, while the top 10% own 60% to 73%. Too many of us are not free from want.
The Supreme Court, in interpreting the First Amendment, has used Thomas Jefferson’s phrase of a “wall of separation” between government and religion. However, some in government favor and support certain religions over others.
If your speech isn’t politically correct, our president might fire you (e.g., James Comey) or get you fired (e.g., Jimmy Kimmel). When you’re on the president’s side, it seems you can say anything without facing backlash (e.g., Charlie Kirk). However, if you criticize this president, you could suffer dire consequences (e.g., Jack Smith and Adam Schiff).
We need to unite and stand up for the freedoms that FDR said all people deserve.
