The writer of the letter “A businessman in the White House” (Nov. 4, TribLive) extols President Trump’s business instincts, but apparently is ignorant of the real effects of tariffs. It’s a hidden tax on Americans, nothing more, nothing less. Why would our president want to raise prices for Americans? Remember when he promised to lower prices “on the first day”?
Regarding his business acumen, consider the following:
• 1991 — Trump’s Taj Mahal went under in one year because of debt and poor financial decisions.
• 1992 — The Trump Castle and Trump Plaza casinos declared bankruptcy.
• 2004 — Trump hotels and casino resorts are bankrupt in Chapter 11, again. How can a casino go bankrupt when the odds are rigged so the casino always wins?
Trump University defrauded applicants, with lawsuits settled for $25 million. The list goes on, and he’s doing the same thing to our country.
His “Big Beautiful Bill” will double, even triple health-care premiums for many. He withheld SNAP food benefits, and while his voters were going hungry he hosted a “Great Gatsby” banquet for billionaires. He tore down the East Wing for a gaudy, opulent and unnecessary ballroom.
Americans don’t want a ballroom for billionaires. I want a functioning president who will solve problems, not create them. Hard to believe his business instinct wouldn’t have advised him to wait until after the election to destroy the White House.
