Regarding the letter “A businessman in the White House” (Nov. 4, TribLive): The first time around, I too, thought that maybe a president with a non- political background could be good for the country. Someone not beholden to others or tainted by the political processes. Boy, was I wrong, but that’s another topic.

The writer made me laugh out loud when she wrote “Thank goodness we now have a business man in the White House who understands finance.” No one can believe that statement if Trump continues to claim tariffs are paid by the exporting countries. That is a lie. Tariffs are paid by the importing companies, who must either “eat” the added cost or pass it on to the consumer.

If Trump’s tariffs continue to push everyday expenses higher and higher, your tough days of the ’80s may not seem so bad.
