Firefighters responded to a fire at a Shaler strip mall shortly after 4:30 Friday morning that affected a dialysis clinic and a Planet Fitness there.

No flames were visible and there were no injuries, according to Shaler Township Fire Chief Dwayne Steinmetz, who was at the scene.

“All it was was a burnt up motor in an air conditioning unit on the rooftop,” Steinmetz said. “It just caused smoke to be pushed into (the dialysis clinic) and the Planet Fitness. It was turned over to the maintenance people to handle the repairs. “

Steinmetz said the Planet Fitness at Shaler Plaza was open at the time but there were no customers in the facility. The dialysis clinic staff were there preparing to open for the day. They were evacuated to allow firefighters to investigate what caused the fire.

There were no damage estimates available.
