Etna Borough officials swore in Brad Iannuzzi as a new council member to fill the vacancy of councilman Greg Porter’s term. The decision was announced at the March 21 borough council meeting.

The borough appointed Iannuzzi, a Democrat, from a pool of three candidates, to serve until Jan. 1, 2024, when Porter’s term ends.

After spending roughly a decade representing the first ward on the Etna Borough council, Porter submitted his resignation in February due to conflicts created by his new job as director of Ross/Westview Medical Services. He will, however, continue in his role as chief of the Etna Volunteer Fire Department.

The procedure for each of the candidates seeking the interim position involved sending a letter of interest to the borough, answering a list of written questions and completing an in-person interview with borough council members.

Iannuzzi, who worked as Etna’s Public Works director from 2020 to 2022, is also a candidate for the full four-year term to replace Porter that begins in January of 2024.

Iannuzzi said he was honored to be chosen to fill in for the remaining nine months of Porter’s term.

“I am a lifelong resident of Etna. My dad grew up in the town. My grandmother is 94. She grew up in the town,” he said. “It’s just really important to me to serve my community in that capacity and I thought this was the best opportunity that I would have.”

The borough issued a statement on its Facebook page congratulating Iannuzzi.

“We welcome Brad to our Council and wish him the best in his new position!”

Etna also had praise for the departing Porter.

“We want to thank Greg for his dedication and service to Council. Greg also serves as Etna’s Fire Department Chief. Greg you will be missed on Council but your service to our community continues!”
