A-K Valley campus clippings: Plum’s Nick Hubner earns PAC lacrosse honors

Plum graduate Nick Hubner, a senior attacker on the Westminster men’s lacrosse team, earned his second straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

He scored nine goals and added two assists in a pair of games for the Titans.

Hubner tallied a pair of goals in a 10-5 loss to conference rival Saint Vincent on April 12 before leading the way with seven goals and two assists in a 20-8 senior day victory over Thiel.

The seven goals against Thiel put him over the top with Westminster’s single-season goals record.

Hubner has 42 goals in 13 games, eclipsing the previous program high of 39 set in 2017.

His totals against Thiel included four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Hubner’s 42 goals lead the PAC, and his 49 points (42 goals, seven assists) ranks sixth.

Westminster returns to action Saturday at Bethany College at 1 p.m.

Baseball

Saint Vincent: Billy Perroz (Kiski Area) has been held without a hit in only three of 30 games this season. He is batting a team-best .450 (49 for 109) through the Bearcats’ doubleheader loss to Grove City on Thursday. He went 3 for 5 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored in the two games against the Wolverines. For the season, Perroz owns 33 RBIs, 12 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 33 runs scored. All of those stats also are team-bests. Saint Vincent is 15-15 overall and 8-6 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Westminster: Freshman Justin Brannagan (Deer Lakes) made his collegiate pitching debut last Sunday against Penn State DuBois. He worked 5 1/3 innings and scattered six hits while walking two and striking out two. He surrendered two earned runs. He left the game with the score tied 2-2 and picked up a no decision. PSU DuBois then struck for two in the seventh to take a 4-2 victory.

Softball

IUP: Freshman Jess Cekada (Highlands) singled home a run and also walked and scored in the Crimson Hawks’ narrow 6-5 loss to Cal (Pa.) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday. Cekada, who has started 30 games for IUP this season, owns 10 RBIs. She collected three hits and drove in three runs in a win over Clarion on April 4. IUP is 20-19 overall and 11-11 in PSAC play.

Track and field

Penn State: Jean Starr (Kiski Area) hopes to keep moving up the ladder in the Big Ten women’s hammer throw rankings. For the third meet in a row, she set a personal-best mark. Starr’s latest mark — 187 feet, 8 inches (57.21 meters) — came Friday at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville. It is the eight-best mark in Penn State history. Her distance also is ninth in the Big Ten rankings.

Clarion: Kaylen Sharrow (Burrell) finished 10th out of 25 competitors in the women’s 100-meter hurdles Thursday at the John Papa Invitational at Slippery Rock. Her time of 16.33 seconds was 15 one-hundredths of a second away from a spot in the finals. Sharrow fared well in the 100 hurdles at the Thiel Tomcat Invite on April 15 as she placed fourth overall (16.60).

Lock Haven: Mason Ochs (Riverview) placed fourth out of 16 entries in the 5,000 meters Wednesday at the Shippensburg Mid-Week Invitational. He finished with a time of 15:57.24.

Women’s lacrosse

Pitt: Emily Couglin (Plum/Oakland Catholic) recorded a hat trick in the Panthers’ 17-7 setback to ACC foe No. 17 Clemson. She has started all 16 games for Pitt this season and ranks fourth on the team with 15 goals, and she also has five assists on the season. Coughlin scored at least one goal in 12 of Pitt’s 16 games. Her three goals against Clemson were a season high.

Men’s volleyball

Penn State: Cal Fisher (Riverview/Penn Hills) hit .514 with 23 kills as the Nittany Lions captain helped the team advance to the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championship match with a 3-1 win over George Mason on Thursday. The All-EIVA first-team selection also helped PSU from the service line with three aces. Fisher reached a personal milestone as he surpassed 1,000 career kills.

Men’s tennis

Westminster: Sophomore Thomas Albert (Valley) won a pair of matches to help the Titans top Presidents’ Athletic Conference rival Washington & Jefferson, 7-2, on Thursday afternoon. Albert edged former Valley teammate Nate Clarke, 7-5, 0-6, 1-0 (10-3), at No. 4 singles. He also teamed with Shaler grad Ryan Crissman to top Clarke and North Catholic grad Jaren Thimons, 8-7 (7-1), at No. 3 doubles.

Men’s golf

Waynesburg: Jake Scheidt (Knoch) placed 14th out of 59 golfers at the 10-team Peter C. Rossin Memorial on Monday at Southpointe Golf Club in Canonsburg. Scheidt shot a round of 86 in the cool and breezy conditions. His score was second for the Yellow Jackets, who placed seventh in the team standings.

Coaching

Washington & Jefferson: Faith Remich (Burrell) has transitioned from running on the track to mentoring others as a a volunteer assistant with the Presidents track and field team. She enjoyed a standout career at W&J through last spring and graduated with three school records: the outdoor 800 meters, and the indoor 600 and 1,600 relay. Also a runner on the cross country team, she earned All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference honors nine times. She finished top three in nine different events on the W&J all-time records lists.
