Aliquippa youth football teams ousted from league following violent incident
There will be no more football for kids in the Aliquippa Little Quips. The youth teams were removed Wednesday from the Beaver County Youth Football League.
Team officials and parents told TribLive news partner WTAE they are distraught over the decision, which came by a 6-3 vote and just days before playoffs begin.
The decision impacts more than 100 youth football players and about 75 cheerleaders.
The removal was the result of a recent fight among adults at a game, along with a “history of misconduct,” the football league said in a statement.
The incident between parents happened Saturday after a game between the Central Valley Little Warriors and the Aliquippa Little Quips, where a pregnant mother was allegedly assaulted by several Aliquippa spectators, according to the football league.
Center Township Police Chief Aldo Legge said he is waiting for better video of the fight to identify people involved. Charges are pending.
“Aliquippa is a football town. We bleed it. We bleed red and black. We love our kids. We love our program,” said Jason Harvey, president of the Aliquippa Youth Football Organization. “This is one way to keep them out of harm’s way. I mean, like, without this, they don’t have nothing. Nothing at all.”
Aliquippa Mayor Dwan Walker told WTAE that he attempted to break up the fight and only saw one Aliquippa spectator involved.
“This was between two stupid parents who got out of theirself, and a situation like that, and caused this whole snowball effect to happen, that detriment to our kids,” Walker said.
According to a BCYFL board member, the removal is not just because of this incident, “but it was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. They have had a history of misconduct. Eight people didn’t vote them out. Eight organizations that have over 150 families all voiced their opinion and said enough is enough.”
Mayor Walker said he’s exploring what legal options the team might have.
