Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool doesn’t practice

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool did not practice Wednesday, a day after coach Mike Tomlin said Claypool was undergoing an MRI to evaluate a toe injury.
The workout was shortened and lightened to the point it was referred to as a walkthrough, and the participation designations were estimated as if it was a full practice. Claypool was designated as not participating. Claypool already has missed one game this season — the Oct. 3 loss in Green Bay because of a hamstring injury.
The Steelers are already down one of their top receivers in JuJu Smith-Schuster, who had season-ending shoulder surgery last month. If Claypool would end up unavailable for Sunday’s home game against the Detroit Lions, Diontae Johnson and James Washington would be the only two proven healthy receivers on the 53-man roster. Ray-Ray McCloud, who mostly has been relied on as a kick and punt returner, also has had an increased role as a receiver. First-year receiver Cody White would slot into a bigger role, and veteran Anthony Miller could be in line for a promotion off the practice squad.
The tight ends could end up with bigger roles, too. On that front, Eric Ebron was estimated as a limited participant at practice after missing the past two games because of an ankle injury.
Other players who Tomlin mentioned as injured during his Tuesday news conference — linebacker Robert Spillane and defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs — were estimated as full practice participants. Spillane has an ankle injury, and Buggs is dealing with a hip ailment.
