District college football roundup: Carnegie Mellon upsets No. 22 Rensselaer

Ben Coyne had three sacks of Carnegie Mellon’s seven sacks, and the Tartans (2-0) upset No. 22 Rensselaer (1-1), 10-7. The win was the sixth straight for Carnegie Mellon over a ranked opponent.
Hayden Hairston’s 23-yard field goal in the first quarter for CMU accounted for the game’s only points until teammate Ben Mills’ 1-yard scoring run with 7:37 left in the fourth quarter. Jake Kazanowsky’s 23-yard touchdown pass to Deen Ninche with 1:46 left broke up the Tartans’ shutout bid. Mills threw for 128 yards.
Allegheny 34, Thiel 6 — Hudson Alread returned an interception for a touchdown, and Tre Worship rushed for a pair of touchdowns to lead Allegheny (1-1). It was the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener for the Gators, who rejoined the conference this season.
Case Western 45, Waynesburg 31 — Drew Saxton threw for 189 yards and rushed for three touchdowns as Case Western (1-1) defeated Waynesburg (1-1). Tyler Raines threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns for Waynesburg, and teammate Dakota Romantino caught seven passes for 104 yards and a TD.
Grove City 55, Geneva 17 — Logan Pfeuffer threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Scott Fraser, as Grove City (2-0) beat Geneva (0-2). Fraser caught three passes for 143 yards, and Nico Flati rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown. Grove City piled up 545 yards of offense following last week’s total of 624 yards against Juniata. Brutus Ogilvie threw for 113 yards and a touchdown for Geneva.
W&J 52, Saint Vincent 21 — Justin Huss rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown, and teammate Raymond Holmes added 102 yards on the ground as Washington & Jefferson (2-0) beat Saint Vincent (0-2). Colton Jones threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns for the Presidents. Brady Walker threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns for Saint Vincent.
Westminster 42, Bethany 3 — Ryan Comes ran for 183 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown, as Westminster (1-1) downed Bethany (1-1). Westminster’s defense limited Bethany to 154 yards, including only 38 in the air.

Duquesne 34, Thomas More 14 — Dwayne Menders caught eight passes for 165 yards and a 67-yard touchdown from Joe Mischler as Duquesne (1-2) amassed 503 yards of offense in its win over Thomas More (1-2). Mischler threw for 238 yards and two touchdowns, and Billy Lucas ran for 136 yards and two TDs.
Richmond 31, St. Francis (Pa.) 21 — Hempfield grad Justin Sliwoski threw and rushed for a touchdown, but the Red Flash fell to 0-2 .
Division II
Bloomsburg 42, Clarion 3 — The Golden Eagles ran for 186 yards, averaging 4.9 yards per carry, but couldn’t put the ball in the end zone in falling to 0-2. Corahn Alleyne had 160 all-purpose yards for Clarion.
Gannon 16, Millersville 10 — Trey Baker and Malachi Woody recorded two sacks each as Gannon (2-0) held Millersville (0-2) to 157 yards and seven first downs. Melvin Blanks ran for 135 yards and a touchdown to pace Gannon’s offense. ‘
IUP 38, East Stroudsburg 35 — Nick Andrassi kicked a 32-yard field goal as time expired to lift IUP to a win in its season opener. Apollo-Ridge grad Duane Brown caught 12 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown.
Kutztown 24, Cal (Pa.) 19 — Donny Blaine threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns as Kutztown (1-1) scored 17 points in the fourth quarter in its win over Cal (Pa.) (1-1). Noah Mitchell threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns for the Vulcans.
Mercyhurst 49, Lock Haven 7 — the Lakers (2-0) scored 43 points in the second half to pull away. Yough grad Dustin Shoaf rushed for 74 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Mercyhurst.
Shippensburg 36, Seton Hill 17 — Redd Douglas scored on a 100-yard kickoff return and TD receptions of 42 and 7 yards as Shippensburg beat Seton Hill in a PSAC crossover game.
Khi’on Smith also scored on a 75-yard interception return for Shippensburg (1-1).
Seton Hill (0-2) turned the ball over four times in defeat. JaiQuawn McGriff caught a 65-yard TD pass and scored on an 8-yard run for Seton Hill.
Shepherd 41, Edinboro 7 — Ronnie Brown ran for 278 yards and touchdowns of 39, 73 and 50 yards to lead No. 5 Shepherd (2-0) to victory over Edinboro (1-1). Isaac Bernard threw for 338 yards and a touchdown for Edinboro, and Thaddeus Stanfield caught seven passes for 127 yards.
Slippery Rock 35, West Chester 14 — Noah Grover threw for 250 yards and a touchdown as No. 18 Slippery Rock (2-0) defeated West Chester (1-1). Chris D’or added 108 rushing yards and a touchdown for Slippery Rock. Munchie Johnson recorded eight tackles, including three for a loss, and a 1/2 sack for Slippery Rock’s defense, which had four sacks and two interceptions.
