District college football roundup for Oct. 26, 2024: Cal (Pa.) beats IUP in OT in Coal Bowl

Davis Black scored on a 3-yard run in overtime to give Cal (Pa.) a 16-13 PSAC victory over IUP in the 15th Coal Bowl on Saturday.

Nick Andrasi kicked a 39-yard field goal in overtime for IUP (5-3, 2-3). Black threw for 142 yards and a 63-yard touchdown to Eric Willis III, who caught five passes for 88 yards, for Cal (7-1, 5-0).

Seton Hill 31, Clarion 16 – Ky’Ron Craggette ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns and Todd Phillips caught four passes for 247 yards to lead Seton Hill (3-5, 1-3) to a PSAC victory. The Griffins scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Jake Cruz went 10 for 18 passing for 302 yards and an 80-yard touchdown to Phillips. Ty Hurst went 16 for 36 for 245 yards and a 39-yard TD pass to Trevon Tate, who finished with five catches for 101 yards, for Clarion (3-5, 1-3).

Gannon 25, Edinboro 21 – Donell Mason caught a 7-yard pass from Jayden Whitaker with 26 seconds left to give Gannon (2-5, 2-2) the PSAC win at Edinboro (2-6, 1-4). Edinboro had gone ahead 21-18 two minutes earlier on Isaac Bernard’s 5-yard pass to Jeremiah Neeley. Whitaker threw for 191 yards and ran for 63 yards and three touchdowns while Mason caught six passes for 94 yards. Bernard threw for 159 yards and three touchdowns.

Division III

Carnegie Mellon 69, Saint Vincent 7 – Ben Mills threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns as No. 18 Carnegie Mellon (6-1, 6-1) amassed 569 yards of offense in its PAC win at Saint Vincent (1-7, 1-7). Willem Bouma added 67 rushing yards and three touchdowns for the Vulcans, who scored 31 points in the second quarter. Nolan Pitsenber had two interceptions for Carnegie Mellon, which limited Saint Vincent to 67 yards of offense and only five first downs.

Grove City 59, Thiel 7 – Logan Pfeuffer threw for 211 yards and four touchdowns and Scott Fraser caught seven passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns as Grove City (6-1, 6-1) rolled to a PAC win. Boden Davidson opened the scoring with a 21-yard pick-six for Grove City. Thiel (1-6, 1-6) was held to 151 yards of offense.

Washington & Jefferson 48, Bethany 7 – Jacob Macosko caught seven passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns as Washington & Jefferson (7-1, 7-1) defeated Bethany (0-7, 0-7) in PAC play. Jacob Pugh threw for 263 yards and four touchdowns for the Presidents while Dawson Dietz recorded three sacks for Washington & Jefferson’s defense, which had seven sacks overall.

Waynesburg 44, Allegheny 41 – Drew Pinkerton kicked the game-winning 32-yard field goal with 15 seconds left, set up by a Ewing Jamison interception with 1:38 to go, leading Waynesburg (3-4, 3-4) to a PAC victory. Waynesburg tied the score on a 62-yard TD pass from Samuel Barber to Tyler Richmond and a 2-point conversion with 2:31 left.

Barber threw for 355 yards and four touchdowns and Zayne Cawley ran for 150 yards and two scores for Waynesburg. Trevor Brncic threw for 306 yards and three scores and Landon Wayne scored on a 49-yard pick-six with 3:59 to go for Allegheny (1-7, 1-7).

Westminster 17, Case Western 14 – Andrew Caranna kicked the go-ahead 21-yard field goal with seven minutes left to lead Westminster (6-1, 6-1) in a showdown of top teams in the PAC. Ryan Gomes ran for 87 yards and a touchdown, Sean O’Shea also ran for a score and Jalen Washington had five catches for 90 yards for Westminster. Alex Fromberg was 29 of 51 passing for 252 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions and Ethan Dahlem caught seven passes for 78 yards and a TD for Case Western (6-1, 6-1).

Division I FCS

Sacred Heart 31, Mercyhurst 14 – Jalen Madison rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes for 37 yards as Sacred Heart (4-5) defeated Mercyhurst (2-6). John Michalski threw for 141 yards and added 53 rushing yards and another TD for Sacred Heart. Adam Urena threw for 229 yards and two touchdowns for Mercyhurst.
