District college football roundup: Slippery Rock, Grove City win in NCAA 1st round

Brayden Long threw for 234 yards and a touchdown to lead No. 15 Slippery Rock to a 45-14 victory over East Stroudsburg (9-3) in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs Saturday.

Chris D’Or ran for 90 yards and a touchdown, Khalid Dorsey added 85 rushing yards and a TD, and Isaiah Edwards contributed 64 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Slippery Rock (11-1), which gained 287 yards on the ground and 521 yards overall. Slippery Rock advances to face Tiffin in next week’s second round.

Division III

Grove City 21, Susquehanna 20 — Logan Pfeuffer hit Ryan Lenhart with a 13-yard touchdown pass with seven second left in the game, followed by Caleb Kuechly extra point, to give No. 16 Grove City (11-0) an NCAA Division III first-round playoff win at No. 9 Susquehanna (10-1). Clayton Parrish ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns for Grove City, which trailed by 10 points early in the third quarter. Keith Green III scored on a 72-yard blocked field goal return near the end of the first half for Susquehanna while teammate Christian Colasurdo kicked two field goals. Grove City will play Cortland in next week’s second round.

Carnegie Mellon 37, Brockport State 7 — Ben Mills threw for a season-high 291 yards and two touchdowns to take game MVP honors as Carnegie Mellon (10-1) topped Brockport State (8-3) in the ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl. Ethan Reifer caught eight passes for 137 yards and Joey McGinnis IV scored a pair of rushing touchdowns for CMU, which won at least 10 games for the fourth time in program history.

Washington & Jefferson 46, USMMA 21 — Jacob Pugh threw for 232 yards and six touchdowns to lead Washington & Jefferson (9-2) over USMMA (7-3) in the James Lynah Bowl. The win was the Presidents’ sixth in seven tries in the ECAC Division III Bowl Series. Jacob Macosko caught five passes for 88 yards and four touchdowns for Washington & Jefferson while teammate John Peduzzi added eight receptions for 96 yards and two TDs. Owen Petrisek paced Washington & Jefferson’s ground game with 117 rushing yards.

Division I FCS

St. Francis (Pa.) 49, Central Connecticut 14 — Cole Doyle threw for 253 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 50 yards as St. Francis (4-6, 4-3) beat Central Connecticut (3-8, 1-6) in NEC play. Dawson Snyder caught six passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns for St. Francis, which outgained Central Connecticut, 549-160. Tobee Stokes added 106 rushing yards and a touchdown for St. Francis. Central Connecticut’s Luquay Washington returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown just under five minutes into the game before St. Francis scored the next 49 points. St. Francis won four of its last six games.
