District college football roundup: Slippery Rock locks up 1st place in PSAC West

Brayden Long threw for 400 yards and five touchdowns as No. 5 Slippery Rock amassed 670 yards of offense in a 56-18 PSAC victory at Edinboro on Saturday afternoon.

Slippery Rock’s Cohen Russell caught five passes for 180 yards and three touchdowns while teammate Kyle Sheets added five receptions for 104 yards and a TD. Isaac Bernard threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns for Edinboro (2-8, 1-6).

Slippery Rock (10-0, 7-0) will represent the Western Division in the PSAC Championship next Saturday at Kutztown.

Cal (Pa.) 34, Gannon 17 – In PSAC play, Bobbie Boyd Jr. ran for 100 yards and a touchdown as Cal (Pa.) (7-2, 6-1) defeated Gannon (5-5, 5-2). The Vulcans’ Davis Black threw for 200 yards and a touchdown and D’Avay Johnson caught four passes for 114 yards. Jayden Whitaker tossed for 159 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

IUP 39, Clarion 27 – Karst Hunter threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 95 yards and a TD as IUP (5-5, 3-4) beat Clarion (2-8, 1-6) in a PSAC matchup. Adam Houser ran for 103 yards and a touchdown for IUP while Hilton Ridley caught seven passes for 117 yards and two TDs. Cole Weightman and Darius Bruce had three and two sacks, respectively, for IUP’s defense, which brought down Clarion quarterbacks six times. Corahn Alleyne caught four passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns for Clarion, which scored the game’s first 14 points.

Seton Hill 14, Mercyhurst 0 – Ky-Ron Craggette scored on a 43-yard touchdown run on Seton Hill’s first possession and that was all the points the Griffins (5-5, 4-3) needed in a PSAC victory that ran their winning streak to three games. Cody Rubrecht caught a 30-yard scoring pass from Jake Cruz in the second quarter. Josh Cohen had eight tackles, including two sacks, for Seton Hill, which held a 225-83 advantage in rushing yards. Darin Mizgorski had seven catches for 71 yards for Mercyhurst (2-8, 1-6).

Division III

Carnegie Mellon 21, Westminster 7 – In its PAC win, Carnegie Mellon (8-1, 8-1) set a school record by holding Westminster (5-4, 5-4) to minus-16 yards rushing. Evan Roper had two sacks for the Tartans while offensively, Ben Mills threw for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Ty McGowan tossed for 228 yards and Westminster’s lone touchdown.

Case Western 42, Allegheny 14 – Alex Fromberg threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns and Noah Coyne caught four balls for 138 yards and two scores as Case Western (7-2, 7-2) picked up a PAC victory. Declan O’Brien caught eight passes for 131 yards and two scores including a 95-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter.

Thiel 30, Saint Vincent 27 – Andrew Plowden rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown and threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Jamar Jeter as Thiel (3-6, 3-6) beat Saint Vincent (2-7, 2-7) in PAC play. Austin Slye threw for 253 yards and a touchdown for the Bearcats.

Washington & Jefferson 45, Geneva 7 – Jacob Pugh threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns to lead Washington & Jefferson to the PAC win at Geneva. John Peduzzi caught four passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns for the Presidents, who outgained Geneva 427-204.

Waynesburg 35, Bethany 26 – Zayne Cawley ran for 336 yards and four touchdowns to lead Waynesburg (2-7, 2-7) to the PAC win at Bethany (0-9, 0-9). Charlie Mills rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown for Bethany, which led 26-21 after three quarters.

Division I FCS

Long Island University 29, St. Francis (Pa.) 28 – Chris Howell and Aviyon Smith-Mack combined for a 72-yard pass play, setting up the go-ahead touchdown run by Owen Glascoe, and Long Island rallied to defeat St. Francis.

The Sharks (3-6, 3-2 Northeast Conference) trailed 28-17 after Red Flash offensive lineman Mason Imbt recovered a teammate’s fumble in the end zone for the 11-point lead early in the fourth quarter. LIU rallied with Howell’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Davon Wells and a 1-yard touchdown run by Glascoe on consecutive possessions. The Sharks failed on two-point conversion tries after each touchdown.

The LIU defense held on downs after Glascoe’s touchdown and the Sharks ran out the clock.

Howell completed 11 of 17 passes for 172 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He was LIU’s leading rusher, with 70 yards, and caught one pass for another 21 yards. Smith-Mack had three receptions for 98 yards.

Freshman Nick Whitfield Jr., making his second start, was 18-of-26 passing for 209 yards for the Red Flash (3-6, 3-3). He had one TD pass. Deondre Scott had 106 yards rushing, including one touchdown.
