The Duquesne men’s basketball team added a highly touted European forward to its class of incoming freshmen and transfers, announcing the commitment of 6-foot-8 forward Jakub Necas from the Czech Republic on Wednesday.

Necas has extensive experience with the Czech national team in age-group competition. Last season, he played for Basket Brno in the top Czech league, averaging 5.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.

“The intriguing thing about Jakub is his versatility,” coach Keith Dambrot said in a press release. “He can play anywhere from the two to the four spots. He is very good with the ball and is also a deceptive athlete. He’s a lefty with the potential to develop into a good shooter in time. Off the court, he is very academically oriented. Jakub will bring a lot of high level experience to our roster.”

All told, the Dukes will add 10 new players for next season – four grad transfers and six freshmen.

The grad transfers will bolster the team’s frontcourt as all four are 6-7 or taller.

They are 6-7 twins Fousseyni and Hassan Drame, who played for Saint Peter’s during its memorable 2022 NCAA Tournament run, 6-7 Andrei Savrasov, a second-team all-conference pick in the Sun Belt while leading Georgia Southern with 14.3 points per game last season, and 6-10 Dusan Mahorcic, a transfer from North Carolina State who has been slowed by knee injuries.

The six-member freshman class includes former Our Lady of the Sacred Heart star Jake DiMichele and Allderdice grad Ethan Anish.

DiMichele’s 2,642 career points are third-most in WPIAL history. He played last season at First Love Christian Academy.

“He’s a very good student who shoots the ball well. He has a chance to contribute for us,” Dambrot said.

Anish was the starting point guard for Allderdice’s back-to-back City League championship teams.

“He comes from a great family. We look forward to having him with us this season,” Dambrot said.

The other incoming freshmen are Kailon Nicholls (Hargrave Military Academy, Va.), Lucas Perusek (St. Edward, Ohio) and Seamus McDermott (Holy Ghost Prep).

The Dukes will return eight players, including three starters, from a team that went 20-13 last season.
