Former Pitt guard Bub Carrington will have a front-row seat at the outset of his NBA career.
Carrington is among 24 players invited to sit in the green room at the NBA Draft at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 26.
Carrington spent only one season at Pitt, but he was the only freshman in the NCAA to average at least 13.5 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists per game last season. He hit 65 3-point field goals and averaged 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists for the Panthers (22-11).
He opened the season with a triple-double (18 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists) against North Carolina A&T and ended it scoring 24 points against No. 4 North Carolina in the ACC Tournament semifinals.
He was named to the ACC’s All-Rookie team and was named All-American by collegeinsider.com.
If history is an accurate indicator, Carrington may not have long to wait in the green room. Seven of the past eight freshmen to average at least 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game have been selected in the top 15 of the draft. Each of the past nine freshmen with those numbers were picked in the first round and seven from that group were among the first six choices.
Carrington will become the 29th Pitt player drafted by the NBA, including eight in the first round. Coach Jeff Capel has had 27 players drafted throughout his career, including 18 in the first round and 10 lottery picks.
