David Fuhrer doesn’t have to worry about ramping up for his first season on the George Mason men’s golf team. Fuhrer spent all summer building up his confidence. The Fox Chapel graduate has found that belief in himself on the junior circuit.
Fuhrer has won three tournaments this summer and wants to find different ways to push himself to improve.
“I feel like I play my best against the best competition,” Fuhrer said. “College may be more mentally challenging. I’m one of the older players in juniors. A lot of the college golfers will be bigger and have more experience.”
Fuhrer recently won the 81st Junior Boys’ Championship at Hershey Country Club. During the three-day competition, Fuhrer shot a 4-under-par 209 to win by four strokes. Fuhrer, who was representing Oakmont Country Club, outlasted Penn-Trafford graduate Nicholas Turowski, who was playing for Hannastown Golf Club, by three strokes.
Fuhrer and Turowski were even going into the final round, but Fuhrer shot a 4-under 67 to grab the victory.
Fuhrer’s hot streak this summer has been a long time in the making. When Fuhrer started weightlifting in high school, he didn’t have a targeted route. He would go in, do what he thought was best and move on.
But two years ago, Fuhrer decided to work with Andrew Dulak, who specializes in helping train people in golf-specific movements.
“Before I worked with Andrew, I never thought about doing the exercises I do now,” Fuhrer said. “It’s been a big benefit for my body.”
Fuhrer also picked up an important win earlier this summer to keep up with a family tradition. He became the third member of his family to win the C.R. Miller Match Play Invitational. He had to survive five playoff holes to join the list.
Frank Fuhrer III won the first event in 1974 at Fox Chapel Golf Club. Steve Fuhrer also won the event in 1980 at Fox Chapel.
“It’s a special event,” Fuhrer said. “My uncle Frank was one of the best players ever from around here. It’s an honor to be on the same trophy as him.”
David Fuher had a strong senior season last fall with Fox Chapel. He qualified for the PIAA Class 3A tournament for the first time and finished in a four-way tie for 10th place after shooting a 2-under 142.
Fuhrer will open his season with George Mason on Sept. 9 at the Howard Invitational. He is itching for the chance to see what the college level has to bring. George Mason is a member of the Atlantic 10 for golf.
“I enjoy playing great competition,” Fuhrer said. “I like having a chance to go to new places and see new things. That’s exciting. I love the coaches and team at George Mason.”
