Fox Chapel grad David Fuhrer is a soon-to-be freshman at George Mason.

David Fuhrer didn’t have it easy. But after five playoff holes, Fuhrer won something several other family members accomplished last Wednesday at Fox Chapel Golf Club.

Fuhrer, a Fox Chapel graduate and incoming freshman at George Mason, became the third member of his family to win the C.R. Miller Memorial Match Play Invitational. Frank Fuhrer III won the first event in 1974 at Fox Chapel Golf Club.

Steve Fuhrer also won the event in 1980 at Fox Chapel Golf Club. The event was held at Fox Chapel Golf Club every year from 1974-94. It has been rotated between venues for years.

David Fuhrer had a strong senior season last fall with Fox Chapel. Fuhrer qualified for the PIAA Class 3A tournament for the first time and finished in a four-way tie for 10th place after shooting a 2-under par 142.

Jacobs takes over as Duquesne’s defense coordinator

Mickey Jacobs, a 2012 Fox Chapel graduate, recently was promoted to defensive coordinator at Duquesne. Jacobs played for Duquesne from 2013-16. While Jacobs played for Duquesne, the Dukes won three NEC championships. He helped the Dukes reach the FCS playoffs in 2015.

After Jacobs graduated, he became a defensive quality control coach at Duquesne in 2018. Jacobs then took a job at Pitt as a defensive and recruiting graduate assistant. He also worked at the University at Buffalo as a senior defensive analyst.

Jacobs returned to Duquesne before last season as the special teams coach. The Dukes finished last season 7-5 and won the NEC championship with a 6-1 conference record. Duquesne lost to Youngstown State in the first round of the FCS playoffs.

Duquesne’s kick return defense ranked 16th nationally and second in the NEC.

Skirboll competes at the Olympic trials

University of Virginia simmer and Fox Chapel graduate Zoe Skirboll was happy to get a second shot at the Olympic swim trials. While Skirboll couldn’t earn a spot in the Paris games, she was happy to see five of her Cavaliers teammates move onto the world stage.

Skirboll finished the 200 breaststroke prelims in 2 minutes, 32.94 seconds. Skirboll also finished 18th in the 100 breaststroke with a personal-best time of 1:08.99.

Killian 5K coming in July

The seventh annual Killian 5K, which honors the late Killian Cavanaugh and raises funds for scholarships in his memory, is set for July 27 at North Park Boathouse in Allison Park.

Cavanaugh was a Shady Side Academy grad and Pine Township resident. He died in 2017 due to illness at age 20 while attending the University of Chicago.

Registration is $35 and benefits the Killian Patrick Cavanaugh Memorial Scholarship fund, which is for a scholarship at Shady Side Academy and The Killian Cavanaugh Memorial Student-Athlete Scholarship at Pine-Richland. Ben Rishel won the Pine-Richland scholarship in 2023 and Cooper Zancosky won it this year.

More information can be found at the event’s website www.killian5k.com.
