George Pickens embraces addition of Mike Williams to Steelers WR corps
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ 6-foot-3, 200-plus pound No. 1 wide receiver is eager to play with the Steelers’ newest 6-foot-3, 200-plus pound wide receiver.
“Adding another big receiver (is beneficial) not only for me but (quarterback Russell Wilson) as well,” George Pickens said Friday after wrapping up a week’s worth of practice following the trade acquisition of Mike Williams on Tuesday.
“It’s always good having a threat on the outside, another big body that can go downfield. For (opposing) defensive coordinators, it’s going to be hard for sure.”
Through eight games this season, Pickens has accounted for more than 46% of the Steelers’ targeted air yards (per NFL Next Gen Stats). That’s the third-highest rate for any pass-catcher’s share of his team’s QB looks in the NFL.
In regards to just the WRs, Pickens has 35 of the 66 catches by the position room, 548 of its 984 yards and 58 of 109 targets.
Though Williams’ addition likely means fewer opportunities for the likes of Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin III and/or Scotty Miller, Pickens said the position room has “embraced” Williams.
“He makes the room even more better than what it is,” running back Najee Harris said of Williams. “We had a good room, and to add another veteran makes it even moreso.”
A two-time 1,000-yard receiver and former No. 7 overall draft pick for whom the Steelers dealt a 2025 fifth-rounder to the New York Jets to acquire, Williams is expected to fill a role for the Steelers offense as soon as Sunday’s game at the Washington Commanders.
Coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith so far have tempered expectations for an immediate assimilation for Williams. But Pickens believes Williams could contribute quickly.
“As soon as he learns the playbook,” Pickens said. “That’s all up to him.”
