Jack Suwinski is back with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The slugging outfielder ended his rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis and was activated before Monday’s series opener against the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park, Pirates manager Don Kelly said.
Suwinski, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right groin strain Aug. 29, went 3 for 9 with two home runs and three RBIs in three games at Indianapolis. Suwinski batted .283/.389/.565 with 10 doubles, 14 homers and 51 RBIs in 56 games for Indianapolis this season.
For the Pirates, Suwinski is batting .132/.286/.240 with four doubles, three homers and eight RBIs in 48 games. He was coming around in August, when he hit three doubles, two homers and six RBIs and drew almost as many walks (12) as strikeouts (13).
“It’s very important,” Kelly said. “The way he swung the bat — he played three games, hit two home runs — down in Indianapolis, I’m looking forward to him carrying that over up here. I thought there was a stretch there when he was up, before he got hurt, where the groin was bothering him for a while towards the end before he went on the IL. I’m just glad to have him back healthy and ready to roll.”
To make room on the active roster, the Pirates optioned outfielder Ji Hwan Bae to Indianapolis.
