The initial social-media post that revealed them came with a caption, “Black & Gold has never looked better.”

While the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins perhaps might disagree, the Pittsburgh Maulers on Thursday unveiled their uniforms for the 2023 season that for the first time are based on the colors associated with the rest of the city.

After using purple-and-orange branding for two prior seasons a pro team called the “Maulers” played in 1984 and 2022, the USFL in January announced a switch to a color scheme that matches not only the Pittsburgh official city flag but also what virtually every other professional sports team in town has deployed.

The Maulers’ helmets will have a gold (yellow?) stripe, similar to the Steelers’. The “home” uniforms will have white numbering outlined in gold with gold over the shoulders and a black background for the chest and back.

When on the “road,” the Maulers will wear a white-based jersey with black shoulders and black numbering outlined in gold.

Both uniforms will feature white pants. A patch on the sleeve will match the familiar logo on the sides of the helmets: the outline of a steelworker in a work helmet wielding a large hammer.

The Maulers, under new coach Ray Horton, will play home games in Canton, Ohio, this season. They went 1-9 during the first season of the new USFL in 2022, when all of the league’s regular season was staged in Birmingham, Ala.

This season’s Maulers schedule opens April 16 in Birmingham against the New Orleans Breakers. The “home” opener is April 23 against the New Jersey Generals.
