Minor league report: Penguins’ losing streak reaches 3

Despite a goal and an assist by forward Tristan Broz, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins fell to the Rochester Americans, 6-4, at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y. on Friday.

Forward Aidan McDonough recorded two assists for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (8-3-1-0) while forwards Mathieu de St. Phalle and Sam Poulin as well as defenseman Alex Alexeyev each contributed a goal.

Goaltender Filip Larsson started the contest then was pulled after making seven saves on 11 shots in 19:49 of ice time. He was replaced by Maxim Pavelenko, who stopped 16 of 17 shots during 37:32 of ice time and was charged with the loss in his American Hockey League debut.

The Penguins suffered their third consecutive defeat (0-2-1) and are 1-3-1 in their past five games after opening the season at 7-0-0.

The Penguins’ next game is a home contest against the Utica Comets on Saturday, 6:05 p.m.


Forward Logan Pietila scored the lone goal in a shootout and led the Wheeling Nailers to a 3-2 win against the Greensboro Gargoyles at the First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.

Defenseman Eric Parker and forward Ryan Mahshie each scored regulation goals for Wheeling (6-1-0-0), which has won five consecutive games.

Goaltender Jake Smith made 33 saves on 35 shots in regulation and overtime, then was perfect on all five shootout attempts he faced as he boosted his record to 2-0-0.

The Nailers’ next game is a road contest against the Gargoyles on Saturday, 7 p.m.
