Minor league report: Penguins, Sergei Murashov win opener

Goaltender Sergei Murashov made 23 saves on 24 shots and led the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a season-opening 2-1 win against the Hartford Wolf Pack at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.

Forward Valtteri Puustinen scored Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s opening goal at 8:32 of the second period while defenseman Owen Pickering netted the winning goal at 3:33 of the third frame.

Highlights:

The Penguins’ next game is a road contest against the rival Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Sunday, 3:05 p.m.


Goaltender Jake Smith made 19 saves on 21 shots for the Wheeling Nailers in a 3-0 preseason loss to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at 1st Summit Arena in Johnstown.

Replacing Smith midway through the contest, Jaxon Castor stopped all 15 shots he faced.

This was the only game of the preseason for the Nailers. They will open the regular season with a road contest against the Cincinnati Cyclones on Oct. 18, 7:35 p.m.
