New Castle native Anthony Richards was hired Monday as a Robert Morris men’s basketball assistant coach.

New Castle native Anthony Richards has joined the Robert Morris men’s basketball program as an assistant coach, the university announced Monday.

“I have known Anthony since he was in junior high school. He has always impacted winning at every level as a player and now as a coach,” head coach Andy Toole said in a statement. “His enthusiasm and knowledge to motivate our student-athletes is at an extremely high level. We know he will impact winning here at Robert Morris while helping our student-athletes reach their maximum potential.”

Richards coached at Sacred Heart last season and helped lead the Pioneers to their highest NEC regular season finish since 2020-21.

He spent the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons at Holy Cross as director of basketball operations and then assistant coach in his second season.

Richards began his coaching career under Sean Miller at Arizona as a graduate assistant in 2018 before being promoted to the director of student-athlete development in 2019. In his final two years at Arizona, he was the program’s video coordinator and the liaison with the academic and compliance office.

As a player, Richards was a two-year starter at Le Moyne, where he had 503 points and 138 assists. The 2014 New Castle grad was a guard on three WPIAL championship teams for the Red Hurricanes and also won a state title.
