Pitt head coach Jeff Capel talks with Papa Amadou Kante during the Panthers’ game against Radford on Nov. 4, 2024, at Petersen Events Center.

Papa Amadou Kante has decided to remain a part of the Pitt men’s basketball team.

After entering the transfer portal earlier this month, the redshirt sophomore removed his name and will stay with the Panthers.

Kante, a native of Dakar, Senegal, averaged 2.1 points and 1.1 rebounds last season. He averaged 7.0 minutes in 22 games and shot 16 of 29 (.552) from the field. He did not play in 2023-24 because of a knee injury.

His best performance this past season came in a 91-90 victory over Ohio State in which he had 12 points and four rebounds.

Kante is expected to be a contributor among a frontcourt rotation that includes transfer center Dishon Jackson, returning forward Cameron Corhen and forward Amdy Ndiaye.

Five other Pitt players — third-team All-ACC guard Jaland Lowe, who has since committed to Kentucky; Marlon Barnes; Amsal Delalic (DePaul); Guillermo Diaz Graham (San Francisco) and Jorge Diaz Graham — entered the transfer portal this offseason. Veterans Ishmael Leggett, Zack Austin and Damian Dunn had their eligibility expire, though Leggett also entered the portal.
