The Penguins’ Harrison Brunicke celebrates with Rickard Rakell (67) after Rakell’s goal against the Red Wings in the second period of their preseason game Tuesday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins played their fifth preseason game Tuesday at PPG Paints Arena, falling to the Detroit Red Wings, 2-1.

A goal by Detroit’s Nate Danielson 17 minutes, 11 seconds into the third period was the difference.

Tristan Jarry started in net for the Penguins, making 17 saves on 19 shots.

Forward Vasily Ponomarev left the contest in the second period after absorbing a hit opposite the Penguins’ bench along the neutral-zone boards.

Ponomarev recorded one shot in 5:26 of ice time. He took his last shift at 7:09 of the second period.

After the game, coach Mike Sullivan said Ponomarev was being evaluated for an unspecified injury.

After a scoreless first period, Rickard Rakell netted his first goal of the preseason at 1:34 of the second frame. It was assisted by Evgeni Malkin and Harrison Brunicke.

Brunicke’s helper was his first point after being drafted by the Penguins in the second round (No. 44 overall) this past June.

The Penguins’ lead was short-lived, as Detroit’s Amadeus Lombardi evened things up 74 seconds later, beating Jarry with a wrister.

The score remained tied until late in the third, when Danielson fired a close-range wrister past Jarry.

With 1:49 to play, the Penguins got a power play after a tripping call on William Wallinder, but it came up empty.

The Penguins’ next preseason game is Thursday at the Columbus the Blue Jackets.
