In their opening game of the preseason, the Pittsburgh Penguins suffered a 2-1 shootout road loss to the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.
Shootout goals by forwards Sean Farrell and Oliver Kapanen secured victory.
Goaltender Sergei Murashov recorded the loss. In 34 minutes, 55 seconds of ice time, he made 19 saves on 20 shots in regulation and overtime, then allowed two goals on five shots during the shootout.
As designed, Murashov replaced starter Joel Blomqvist midway through the contest. Blomqvist stopped all 11 shots he faced over 30:05 of ice time.
Forward Tristan Broz scored the Penguins’ lone goal in regulation during a power-play sequence at 10:26 of the first period. He also collected the team’s only goal during the shootout.
Penguins forwards Anthony Mantha, Tommy Novak, Ben Kindel and Avery Hayes were unsuccessful on their shootout attempts.
The Penguins’ next game of the preseason is a road contest against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday.
