The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward prospect Melvin Fernstrom to a three-year entry-level contract Friday.

According to Puckpedia, the contract will carry a salary cap hit of $872,500.

Fernstrom, 19, was acquired as part of a multi-player trade that sent forward Drew O’Connor and defenseman Marcus Pettersson to the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 31.

The Canucks drafted Fernstrom, a right-handed shot, in the third round (No. 93 overall) in 2024.

A native of Sweden, Fernstrom (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) spent most of the 2024-25 season with Orebro HK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). In 48 games with that club, he scored 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) and was named the SHL’s rookie of the year.

Per Orebro HK’s website, Fernstrom is under contract with that club for the 2025-26 season. That could allow his NHL contract to “slide” — i.e. begin — to the 2026-27 season.
