It won’t take long for the Pittsburgh Penguins to cross paths with former head coach Mike Sullivan.

On Monday, the NHL announced the Penguins will face the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on the league’s opening night of the 2025-26 season, Oct. 7.

The game is scheduled to start after 8 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN.

Sullivan, who led the club to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017, left the Penguins on April 28 in what the team portrayed as a mutual parting. In parts of 10 seasons with the club, Sullivan became the Penguins’ all-time leader in coaching wins with a record of 409-255-89.

Less than a week after he parted company with the Penguins, Sullivan was hired by the Rangers on May 2.

Following an extensive search, the Penguins hired former Rangers assistant coach Dan Muse to replace Sullivan on June 4.

The NHL’s entire 2025-26 schedule is slated to be released at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
