The Pittsburgh Penguins have designated defenseman Matt Dumba to the non-roster list in order to formally place him on waivers at 2 p.m. Friday.

That transaction was made after the Penguins swung a major trade with the Edmonton Oilers that sent goaltender Tristan Jarry and forward Sam Poulin to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for goaltender Stuart Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak and a second-round draft pick in 2029.

Should Dumba go unclaimed by the NHL’s other 31 teams, he can be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on Saturday.

Dumba, a right-handed shot, has appeared in 11 games this season and scored three points (one goal, two assists) while averaging 14:56 of ice time per contest.

Largely deployed on the third pairing, Dumba has been a healthy scratch for 18 games this season.

Dumba, 31, is in the final year of a two-year contract with a salary cap hit of $3.75 million.

This transactions allows the Penguins to stay at the NHL limit of 23 players on the active roster.

The Penguins acquired Dumba and a second-round draft pick in 2028 in a trade that sent defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok to the Dallas Stars on July 10.
