Penguins' Tristan Jarry expected to make 5th straight start
The Pittsburgh Penguins plan to start netminder Tristan Jarry on Tuesday evening at home vs. the New York Islanders, coach Mike Sullivan revealed following his club’s morning skate in Cranberry.
For Jarry, it’ll make five consecutive starts.
Jarry has helped the Penguins to a four-game winning streak, matching a season-best by the team, and is 12-8-4 on the year with a 3.13 goals-against average and .894 save percentage.
Over his last four starts, Jarry has posted far stronger numbers, as he’s gone 4-0 with a 2.25 GAA and .929 save percentage, stopping 120 of 129 shots.
Notes:
• The Penguins recalled forward Joona Koppanen from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on Tuesday morning under emergency roster conditions.
Koppanen, 27, has six goals and 15 assists in 53 AHL contests this season. He had two goals Sunday vs. the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He appeared in four games with the Penguins in 2023-24 and was originally a fifth-round (No. 135 overall) draft pick by the Boston Bruins in 2016.
Sullivan said a handful of players are “nicked up” at the moment, which, along with Koppanen’s strong play of late, led to him getting an NHL call-up.
“He can kill penalties, he can play a checking role, play center,” Sullivan said of the 6-foot-5 left-shooting winger. “The biggest reason, quite honestly, is because he’s played real well.”
• The following Penguins players partook in morning skate Tuesday:
Forwards: Boko Imama, Emil Bemstrom, Kevin Hayes, Koppanen, Matt Nieto, Phil Tomasino
Defensemen: Vladislav Kolyachonok, Sebastian Aho
Goalies: Alex Nedeljkovic
• Per Newsday, the Islanders are expected to start Ilya Sorokin in net. Sorokin is 25-20-5 this season with a 2.73 GAA and .907 save percentage. In two games versus the Penguins in 2024-25, he is 2-0 with a 3.00 GAA and .897 save percentage. … New York defensemen Adam Boqvist and Alexander Romanov are not expected to play due to illness.
• The Penguins on Tuesday formally announced news previously reported by TribLive that the club will play regular-season games in Sweden in 2025-26.
Two contests vs. the Nashville Predators have been scheduled for Nov. 14 and 16, 2025, at Avicii Arena in Stockholm, as part of the NHL Global Series Sweden.
The Penguins previously squared off vs. the Ottawa Senators in Stockholm for a pair of games to begin the 2008-09 campaign, marking their last regular-season trip abroad.
Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson (Landsbro) and forward Rickard Rakell (Sundbyberg) notably hail from Sweden. Both recently represented the Swedes at the 4 Nations Face-Off.
“It’s exciting,” Sullivan said. “Any time you get an opportunity to participate in events like that I think is exciting for our players. … I think for the guys on our team that will be there, their hometown so to speak, it takes on a particular meaning.
“I think it means a lot to those guys to have the opportunity to go back and participate in an NHL game in their native country. It’s a great initiative. It gives the league an opportunity to showcase some of the talent.”
