Penn Township ready to defend Junior Legion regional, state titles

Penn Township is the returning Pennsylvania Youth American Legion Western Regional and state champion.

It opens defense of the Western Regional at 5 p.m. Friday at the White Township Complex in Indiana against Indiana County champion Brookville.

Pool play format will be played Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the top two finishers in each pool advancing to the championship Monday.

Four games are scheduled each day. Joining Indiana County champion Brookville and host team S.W. Jack are Westmoreland champion Murrysville and third-place Connellsville, as well as Northwest champion Wesleyville, runner-up Erie and third-place Edinboro.

Pool A consists of Connellsville, Erie, Murrysville and S.W. Jack, while Pool B consists of Brookville, Edinboro, Penn Township and Wesleyville.

Friday’s schedule has Murrysville playing Erie Post 771 at 4:45 p.m. at Homer City; Edinboro vs. Wesleyville at 5:30 p.m. at Hogan Field at the White Township complex; and S.W. Jack vs. Connellsville at 7:30 p.m. at Homer City.

Saturday’s schedule is: Brookville vs. Edinboro at 10 a.m.; Penn Township vs. Wesleyville at 1 p.m.; Erie vs. Connellsville at 4:45 p.m.; and S.W. Jack vs. Murrysville at 7:45 p.m., all at the Commonwealth Field in Homer City

Sunday’s schedule is: Penn Township vs. Edinboro at 10 a.m.; Brookville vs. Wesleyville at 1 p.m.; Murrysville vs. Connellsville at 4:45 p.m.; and S.W. Jack vs. Erie at 7:45 p.m.

Monday’s schedule has the pool runners-up battling for the third-place berth in the state tournament at 10 a.m. and the pool winners for the championship and state berth at 1 p.m.

The state tournament is slated to begin July 29, in Homer City.
