Now this is what you call a good deal.

Anglers taking part in Pennsylvania’s statewide mentored youth trout day this Saturday will be able to pursue fish a full week before anyone else.

But get a free breakfast, too?

That’s the deal awaiting those who fish at Blackleggs Creek Memorial Park near Saltsburg in Indiana County.

Volunteers from Blackleggs Creek Watershed Association will serve a free fishermen’s breakfast at the park — going as long as the food holds out — as part of its ongoing effort to get families outdoors, said long-time member Art Grguric.

Anglers will find plenty of fish awaiting them, too. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission stocked Blacklegs Creek on March 4.

The watershed association, meanwhile — which runs its own cooperative trout nursery — is stocking the creek on Thursday and again the morning of the mentored opener, Grguric said. Roughly half of its 15,000 fish will be available to anglers by then.

“There will be lots of trout in the creek,” he said. “They’re not small either. They’re nice fish.”

Actual fishing on mentored day begins at 8 a.m. Children younger than 16 can fish provided they get either a free mentored youth permit or a voluntary youth fishing license, which costs $2.90. They can keep two fish, provided they are at least 7 inches long.

They must be accompanied by an adult, though.

Those adults can fish, too, but need an adult license and a trout stamp. They must release all fish they catch.

Families can even camp in Blackleggs Park for free Friday night if they want.

But the real action — and food — will be on Saturday.

“It’s time for families to get together with their kids. That’s what mentored day is all about,” Grguric said.
