The Pittsburgh Pirates announced the hiring of Brent Strom as assistant pitching coach Thursday morning.

Strom, 76, will assist Oscar Marin, who will enter his sixth season with the Pirates in 2025.

Most recently, Strom served as pitching coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2022-24.

“Brent has a proven track record throughout his career of helping pitchers take the next step to being successful at the big league level,” manager Derek Shelton said in a news release. “We are excited about what he will bring to our coaching staff as well as the talented group of pitchers that we already have on our staff right now.”

He spent 2014-21 with the Houston Astros, winning the 2017 World Series with the club while coaching Dallas Keuchel (2015) and Justin Verlander (2019) during years where they went on to capture the Cy Young Award.

In total, Strom has served as an MLB pitching coach for 14 seasons.

Baseball America named him MLB Coach of the Year in 2018.

A two-time national champion at Southern California, Strom enjoyed an MLB career from 1972-77 with the New York Mets, Cleveland Indians and San Diego Padres.
