The Pittsburgh Pirates appointed outfielder Jack Suwinski to serve as their 27th man on roster for Thursday’s doubleheader in Detroit vs. the Tigers.
With Wednesday evening’s contest at Comerica Park postponed due to rain, the Pirates and Tigers are making it up at 5:40 p.m. Thursday, following the original series finale at 1:10 p.m.
Suwinski, 26, was not in the announced starting lineup for Game 1 of the doubleheader, but is available to come off the bench, as well as play in Game 2.
Per MLB rules, he must be returned to the minor leagues following the completion of the doubleheader.
Suwinski previously appeared in 16 games with the Pirates this season, hitting .126 with 19 strikeouts in 39 at-bats, leading to a demotion to Triple-A Indianapolis in late April.
Since then, Suwinski has remained with the Indians, for whom he’s had more success at the plate, slashing .264/.350/.521 with nine homers and 36 RBIs in 41 games.
Suwinski’s struggles at the plate to begin the season were a continuation of a disappointing 2024 campaign, in which he batted .182 over 88 games, hitting nine homers with 26 RBIs.
The year prior, Suwinski showed significant promise in his sophomore MLB season, belting 26 homers with 74 RBIs in 144 games.
In 2022, as a rookie Suwinski hit 19 home runs in 106 games.
He last appeared for the Pirates on April 20.
