Nick Gonzales, who has a non-displaced ankle fracture, will have a CT scan Monday in Pittsburgh, general manager Ben Cherington said Sunday on his radio show on 93.7 The Fan.

“We’ll know a little bit more there, don’t expect that we’re going to learn a lot more,” Cherington said.

Gonzales originally injured the ankle during spring training. At that time, x-rays were negative. “Did not show anything,” Cherington said.

“When that happens, you treat it symptomatically. When he tells us he’s ready to play, then he’s ready to play. He did, so he’s in there Opening Day.”

Gonzales left the game Thursday in Miami after he hit a home run in the sixth inning.

“It’s not clear exactly when in the game it flared up again,” Cherington said, “whether it was before the home run or during the home run.”

A subsequent MRI revealed a fracture that the x-ray failed to show.

“Now, we have to let that thing heal,” said Cherington, who offered no timeline for Gonzales’ return other than to say the injury is not season-ending.

“Bottom line, simple as that, he’ll be in a boot for a while. He’s going to come back and play this year, no doubt.”
