The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned right-handed pitcher Thomas Harrington to Triple-A Indianapolis and will make a corresponding move before Friday’s series opener at the Cincinnati Reds.
The 23-year-old Harrington is ranked the No. 3 player in the Pirates’ system and a top-100 prospect by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline.
Harrington was 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and one save with seven strikeouts, five walks and three home runs allowed in eight innings over two games, including a start.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder started April 1 at Tampa Bay and allowed six earned runs on seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts in four innings in the 7-0 loss. He pitched the final four innings of an 8-4 win over the Cardinals on Monday to earn his first major-league save.
