Pirates place Corey Dickerson on injured list with right shoulder strain

Pirates left fielder Corey Dickerson works out Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at PNC Park.

Already minus one outfielder for an extended period, the Pittsburgh Pirates will be without Gold Glove left fielder Corey Dickerson for at least 10 days. They placed him on the injured list Thursday afternoon with a right posterior shoulder strain.

With Dickerson joining Lonnie Chisenhall in the trainer’s room, the Pirates are down to Melky Cabrera, Starling Marte, J.B. Shuck and utility player Pablo Reyes for the short term.

The Pirates didn’t immediately replace Dickerson with a position player — they activated starting pitcher Jordan Lyles — but help may be coming. Outfielder Jason Martin was removed from the Triple-A Indianapolis roster Thursday.

Shuck started in left field for the series opener against the Cincinnati Reds. Cabrera was in right, with Marte flanking them in center.

Chisenhall fractured his right index finger March 26, and his return is uncertain.

“I went to Lonnie (when Dickerson was hurt) and said, ‘You can’t hit an HOV lane in your recovery and rehab because another guy went down,’ ” manager Clint Hurdle said. “We need you to be back when it’s appropriate to help the club.”

Dickerson was batting .154 with one double, a home run and two RBIs. He grounded out as a pinch-hitter Wednesday night.

With the injury being in the back of Dickerson’s shoulder, he has been placed on a “no-throw status,” trainer Todd Tomczyk said. The injury does not impact Dickerson’s hitting.

Dickerson didn’t know whether his injury would keep him out of the lineup beyond the allotted 10 days on the injured list.

“My strength is really good, pretty much everything strength-wise,” Dickerson said. “It’s all about the little things we are going to do in treatment and really work to get it 100 percent. I think they’ll have a better feel of that in the next couple of days and take it step by step.”

Dickerson’s ailment came at an inopportune time for the Pirates, who are off to a 1-3 start.

“It’s better to take care of it now to be able to help the team for as many months as I can at 100 percent than try to manipulate and let it linger and not help the team as much as I want,” Dickerson said. “I’d rather knock it out now when we have more off days coming up and try to get it to 100 percent.”

The Pirates were a position player short for the series opener because Hurdle wanted to protect his bullpen a day after relievers failed to protect a late-inning lead for the second consecutive game.

That could change Friday if the Pirates promote Martin, 23, who reached Triple-A last season for the first time in his six-year minor league career.
