The Pittsburgh Pirates placed right-handed reliever Chase Shugart on the 15-day injured list Tuesday because of left knee inflammation.

In a corresponding transaction, outfielder Jack Suwinski was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Shugart, 28, has enjoyed a solid first season with the Pirates. Over 32 games, he is 4-3 with a 3.69 ERA, striking out 22 with 15 walks in 39 innings.

Eight of his outings have been two or more innings, and he has gone one-plus inning in another four.

Before joining the Pirates this season, Shugart had appeared in six big-league games last season with Boston, with the Red Sox originally drafting him in 2018 (12th round, No. 370 overall).

Suwinski, 26, rejoins the Pirates for the first time since June 21, when he was called up to serve as the club’s 26th man for a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers.

At the major-league level, this season has featured a continuation of struggles that have plagued Suwinski since 2024, when he slashed .182/.264/.324 over 88 games with the Pirates, failing to build off of a strong sophomore campaign a year prior in which he clubbed 26 homers with 21 doubles and 74 RBIs.

Over 18 big-league games this year, Suwinski is batting just .119 with 20 strikeouts in 42 at-bats.

But at Triple-A, Suwinski has fared better, slashing .280/.382/.544 with 12 homers and 48 RBIs through 53 games.

At the time of his promotion Tuesday, Suwinski’s 48 RBIs since making his 2025 Indians debut ranked second in the International League.

Per MLB.com, Suwinski joined the Pirates at Kauffman Stadium for their game against the Kansas City Royals.

Note: The Pirates also announced that injured lefty reliever Ryan Borucki (low back inflammation) is beginning a rehab assignment with Low-A Bradenton on Tuesday.
