Pirates pitcher Marco Gonzales throws against the Padres on Aug. 7 at PNC Park.

Pittsburgh Pirates lefty starter Marco Gonzales dealt with some tough luck early into the season when he was sidelined with a forearm strain after only three starts on April 14.

The injury ultimately kept him off the mound for nearly three months, but Gonzales returned to the fold in mid-July.

However, Gonzales suffered another forearm strain, which will once again land him on the injured list, the Pirates announced late Monday evening.

Although this time, there is no chance of Gonzales recovering in time to pitch again in 2024, as the 32-year-old was placed on the 60-day injured list, ending his season.

He had made four starts since returning from his initial injured list stint.

In a corresponding transaction, the Pirates selected the contract of right-handed reliever Ryder Ryan from Triple-A Indianapolis.

On the year, his first with Pittsburgh, Gonzales went 1-1 with a 4.54 ERA through seven starts and 33⅔ innings, striking out 23.

With Gonzales unable to make his scheduled start Monday night in San Diego, Jake Woodford was called upon to do so.

Over three appearances (one start) with the Pirates since being called up from Triple-A at the end of July, Woodford is 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA.

As for Ryan, 29, he was most recently designated for assignment by the Pirates on July 30.

In 13 appearances with the Pirates, he is 1-0 with a 5.29 ERA over 18 innings.

At Indianapolis, Ryan appeared in 23 games, going 0-1 with a 4.45 ERA.
