The finger laceration that caused Pittsburgh Pirates catcher/first baseman Endy Rodriguez to be removed from Monday’s game against the Washington Nationals required four stitches and a stint on the 10-day injured list, Pirates manager Derek Shelton said Tuesday afternoon.

Rodriguez was injured when Pirates starter Paul Skenes hit James Wood with a pitch that ricocheted off the ring finger of Rodriguez’s right hand. He was replaced by Henry Davis only two batters into the first inning of the 10-3 win.

With Rodriguez out, the Pirates recalled right-handed reliever Chase Shugart from Triple-A Indianapolis. Shugart didn’t allow an earned run in 3 2/3 innings over three appearances for the Pirates this season but was optioned Saturday when Davis was recalled after catcher Joey Bart’s back locked up in the series opener at Cincinnati. Bart hasn’t played since Friday, and Shelton said his status was still to be determined.

“It’s a back, so I think figuring out his mobility, figuring out his ability to play, his ability to rotate and just seeing actually where we are at with him,” Shelton said of Bart. “So, we are going to run him through a workout today, and I think we’ll have a better idea once we get through that.”

In case Bart isn’t cleared to play, the Pirates added catcher Abrahan Gutierrez to the taxi squad. The 6-foot, 230-pound Gutierrez, 25, batted .252 with 10 doubles and 20 RBIs in 44 games last season at Double-A Altoona and was 5 for 13 (.385) in five games at Indy.

Gold Glove utility infielder Jared Triolo began a rehabilitation assignment Tuesday night, starting at third base for Indianapolis against Toledo. Triolo is eligible to come off the 10-day IL on Wednesday.
