Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi lost a veteran special teams player and reserve cornerback to the transfer portal Monday, a day after he received a verbal commitment from a transfer who plays the same position.

Jahvante Royal, who has been with the program since 2020, played in 24 career games for the Panthers, mainly on special teams. He never started a game and concluded his time at Pitt with five tackles.

Pitt entered this offseason with a big need at cornerback after losing seniors M.J. Devonshire, A.J. Woods and Marquise Williams. Narduzzi added Nebraska transfer Tamon Lynum soon after the end of the 2023 season and Jaremiah Anglin Jr., a transfer from Kentucky, on Sunday.

Those two are in addition to cornerbacks who competed for playing time during spring drills, including sophomore Ryland Gandy, juniors Tamarion Crumpley and Noah Biglow and senior Rashad Battle.

Pitt has lost 19 players to the portal since the end of the season — eight since the end of the spring game — and added 12.
