Pitt volleyball star Valeria Vazquez Gomez chosen in 4th round of Pro Volleyball Federation draft
No one doubted that Pitt sixth-year senior volleyball player Valeria Vazquez Gomez had a future as a pro.
But the Omaha Supernovas of the Pro Volleyball Federation verified it Monday by choosing her sixth in the fourth round of the second all-time PVF draft. She will have the opportunity to play pro volleyball at the end of Pitt’s season.
Vazquez Gomez would join former Pitt volleyball players Courtney Buzzerio, Kayla Lund, Leketor Member-Meneh, Chiamaka Nwokolo and Layne Van Buskirk in the league.
Vazquez Gomez recorded her 1,000th career kill against Virginia on Nov. 1 and will take a stat line of 1,050 kills, 983 digs, 124 aces, 151 blocks and 109 assists into No. 1-ranked Pitt’s match at No. 3 Louisville on Wednesday.
She was a second-team All-American in 2022 and was an All-ACC and American Volleyball Coaches Association East Coast Region member in ‘22 and ‘23. Vazquez Gomez is first in Pitt history for total digs in an NCAA Tournament (62) and tied for first for most aces (four) in an NCAA Tournament match set last year in the Elite Eight against Louisville.
