Barry Dunning Jr. (22), shown playing for UAB in 2024, played at South Alabama this past season.

Pitt men’s basketball coach Jeff Capel continued to rebuild his roster Saturday, receiving a comment from South Alabama transfer Barry Dunning Jr., according to On3sports.

The 6-foot-6 junior small forward averaged 15.1 points and 7.2 rebounds this season in earning first-team All-Sun Belt recognition and helping South Alabama tie for first in the Sun Belt Conference at 13-5 and post an overall record of 21-11.

Dunning is the third player to transfer to Pitt so far this offseason, joining center Dishon Jackson and guard Nojus Indrusaitis, both from Iowa State.

In addition to playing this past season at South Alabama, Dunning also played at Arkansas and UAB. He attended McGill-Toolen High School in Mobile, Ala., where he was the state’s Mr. Basketball after averaging more than 25 points and 13 rebounds as a senior. He also was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and was a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year.

This season he shot 46% from the field and also was a 31% shooter from behind the 3-point arc.

Pitt has three remaining scholarship players set to return — starting forward Cam Corhen and reserves Brandin Cummings and Amdy Ndiaye.

Six Pitt players have entered the transfer portal since the season ended March 11 — third-team All-ACC guard Jaland Lowe, who has since committed to Kentucky; Papa Amadou Kante; Marlon Barnes; Amsal Delalic; and Guillermo and Jorge Diaz Graham. In addition, veterans Ishmael Leggett, Zack Austin and Damian Dunn all had their eligibility expire.
