The Steelers picked Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson with the 20th pick in the third round Friday night.

Continuing a run of offensive players in the NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers took Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson with their first pick of the third round Friday night, the No. 84 overall selection.

Wilson joined tackle Troy Fautanu and center Zach Frazier as the team’s top three picks. The Steelers then took inside linebacker Payton Wilson with ther second pick of the third round. They have three more picks Saturday — a fourth-rounder and two sixth-rounders — on the final day of the draft.

In Michigan’s run to the national championship, Wilson started 15 games after starting nine over the previous two seasons combined. He led the Wolverines with 48 catches and totaled 789 receiving yards. His 12 touchdowns ranked tied for ninth in the nation.

“You could see his instincts on tape, and I thought he stepped up in the big moments,” offensive coordinator Arthur Smith said. “He had a great energy about him too when I met him in person.”

Smith said the 5-foot-11, 185-pound Wilson has the versatility to play inside and outside. Wilson, who has 4.39 speed, will compete for playing time alongside George Pickens, the only returning starter from last season.

Smith was part of a Steelers contingent that attended Michigan’s pro day. By then, Wilson already had a rapport with coach Mike Tomlin.

It was at the Senior Bowl in January that Tomlin pulled Wilson and top cornerback prospect Quinyon Mitchell aside and said they needed to be paired in one-on-one matchups.

“Knowing he’s watching me and wants me to go against the best and ball out … that’s what I did,” Wilson said.

After trading their most established pass catcher, Diontae Johnson, to the Carolina Panthers, the Steelers were expected to add the position in the draft, which had considerable depth at receiver.

Seven receivers were selected in the first round Thursday followed by four in the second Friday. Malachi Corley, who had visited with the Steelers for a top-30 interview, was taken with the first pick of the third, and Cincinnati took Jermaine Burton at No. 80.

Wilson was frustrated his name wasn’t called sooner.

“I feel like I’m a top-10 receiver,” Wilson said. “Watching a lot of receivers go in front of me, I thought a lot of people doubted me.”

Since the Johnson trade, the Steelers have added veterans Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins in free agency. The roster also includes former fourth-round draft pick Calvin Austin III.

“The reason they took me is they expect me to come in and play and help this team win games,” Wilson said. “That’s what I intend to do.”

Wilson grew up in Hawaii and competed against Steelers outside linebacker Nick Herbig.

“Never thought I would be on the same team with him in the NFL,” he said. “As we got closer to the draft, I heard more and more rumblings. I could kind of see it happening before it started.”
