Steelers swap receivers on active roster, promoting Amara Darboh and cutting Tevin Jones

Amara Darboh runs a route during an organized team activity session for the Seattle Seahawks in May. On his fifth team since being a third-round pick in 2017, Darboh was promoted to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ active roster Monday.

About 15 hours after after three of their wide receivers combined for minus-1 net yard with five targeted passes, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a move at the bottom of that position’s depth chart.

The Steelers promoted Amara Darboh from their practice squad to the active roster and released Tevin Jones after he dropped both passes thrown to him during a 17-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night.

The final pass thrown Jones’ way was a crucial one and was the more obvious drop. With the Steelers having a first down at the Buffalo 31 with 3 minutes, 4 seconds left, Jones was open over the middle but could not corral the Devlin Hodges pass.

Jones had four catches for 61 yards in five games on the active roster following a 1 ½-year stint on the Steelers’ practice squad before his promotion Nov. 14. That was the first NFL regular-season action for Jones, who turns 27 next week.

In college, Darboh was Michigan’s leading receiver his junior and senior seasons and was a third-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2017. He had eight catches in 16 games his rookie season but joined his fifth organization since when the Steelers signed him to their practice squad Nov. 18.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Darboh ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash at the 2017 NFL combine.

Darboh becomes the ninth skill-position offensive player the Steelers have used this season that at some point was released during the season.
