Weekend College Top 10: Grove City football hands Carnegie Mellon 1st loss

Every Monday, the Tribune-Review will highlight 10 top area college performances from the weekend:

1. Grove City football edges previously unbeaten CMU in 2OT

Josh Ehst scored on a 1-yard keeper in double overtime as the Wolverines prevailed 29-26 in a PAC game Saturday.

Wesley Schools ran 34 times for 176 yards for Grove City (3-2, 2-2), and Cameron Drake (Central Valley) caught six passes for 148 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Chris Haas had 27 carries for season-high 119 yards for Carnegie Mellon (4-1, 3-1), and Kris Hughes caught two touchdowns.

2. IUP shuts down Cal (Pa.) in Coal Bowl

Duane Brown (Apollo-Ridge) caught two touchdowns, and JoJo Gause earned Coal Bowl MVP after catching six passes for a career-best 129 yards as the No. 19 Crimson Hawks won 17-6 on Saturday.

IUP (5-0, 2-0) held Cal (3-2, 1-1) to 95 passing yards and 55 total yards in the second half, when the Crimson Hawks scored both of their touchdowns.

Nazir Streater and Damon Lloyd made 11 tackles apiece in the win. Quinton Maxwell threw for 313 yards and two TDs.

Julian Cox (New Castle) recorded a season-best 12 tackles for Cal.

3. Hines returns from injury, leads Duquesne football

A.J. Hines, who missed the past two games, ran 32 times for 140 yards and a touchdown as the Dukes opened Northeast Conference play with a 21-14 victory over LIU on Saturday.

Hines became the third player in school history to eclipse 4,000 career yards. Duquesne (3-2, 1-0) forced three turnovers, all by Daivon Ellison (two interceptions, fumble recovery). LIU dropped to 0-4, 0-3.

4. No. 10 Slippery Rock football improves to 5-0

Kicker Jake Chapla (Plum) became the program’s all-time leading scorer, helping The Rock rout Mercyhurst, 45-14, in a PSAC game Saturday.

Chapla kicked six extra points and a field goal, giving him 323 career points and passing Stan Kennedy, who set the mark in 2000.

The Rock’s Roland Rivers III threw for 206 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 42 yards and another touchdown. He threw two interceptions, which were his first turnovers of the season.

Jermaine Wynn Jr. (Woodland Hills) made seven catches for 82 yards and a touchdown and also returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown.

The Rock, which faces No. 19 IUP on Saturday, improved to 2-0 in conference.

Mercyhurst dropped to 2-3, 0-2.

5. No. 4 Pitt volleyball tops No. 23 Florida State

The Panthers recorded their fourth win over a top-25 opponent this season with a 25-15, 26-24, 14-25, 25-19 road victory Sunday.

Chinaza Ndee had 15 kills for Pitt (15-1, 4-0 ACC), and Kayla Lund added 14 kills and 12 digs. Stephanie Williams contributed 13 kills.

Florida State dropped to 9-4, 3-1.

6. Pitt-Greensburg women’s soccer stays unbeaten

Ashley Lucas and Tiffany Michalek scored as the Bobcats downed D’Youville, 2-0, on Saturday. Lauren Yoder made five saves for her eighth shutout this season for Pitt-Greensburg (11-0, 3-0 AMCC).

7. W&J football cruises to PAC victory

Jacob Adams threw four touchdowns — three to Josh Burns (Moon) — as the Presidents routed Bethany, 69-21, on Saturday.

W&J (4-1, 3-1) recorded a season-best 620 yards. Adams threw for 301 yards, and Jordan West (Washington) ran for three TDs. Burns finished with nine catches for 163 yards.

8. Cal (Pa.) men’s soccer knocks off No. 4 Gannon

Freshman Chance Pursifull scored his first collegiate goal in the 67th minute as the Vulcans won 1-0 on Saturday to earn their biggest upset in recent program history. Senior goalkeeper Joseph Valeriano recorded the shutout for Cal (2-4-1, 1-1-1 PSAC).

Gannon dropped to 6-1, 0-1.

9. Rock tennis tandem wins PSAC doubles title

Top-seeded Lois Page and Viola Lugmayr won all four of their matches en route to the conference crown Sunday, becoming Slippery Rock’s first doubles champions since 2004. They beat IUP’s Katya Minchenkova and Idoia Huerta, 9-8 (9-7), in the final.

10. Edinboro freshman sweeps tennis titles

Nils Plutat earned the PSAC men’s singles and doubles championships over the weekend. He topped Mercyhurst’s Ruairdh Fraser, 2-6, 7-5, 10-5, in the singles final, fighting off match point. In the doubles championship, Plutat and Tommy Hsu prevailed.
