The Western Pennsylvania Youth Football League has returned after a year hiatus because of the covid pandemic, and the 2021 season kicked off this past weekend.

The WPYFL’s 40 members stretch across seven counties and nearly 3,000 square miles in Southwestern Pennsylvania, making it the largest youth football organization in the state and one of the largest in the country.

The league has been selected by USA Football as one of only six across the U.S. to pilot the new Football Development Model.

The initiative, according the USA Football website, is “designed to make the game safer by reducing contact and teaching in a way that meets an athlete where they are in their development.”

To be more representative of the membership, the league in March 2020 changed its name from the Washington Greene Youth Football League.

The WPYFL playoffs are slated to begin the weekend of Oct. 16-17 with the championship games Nov. 6-7.

Additional information on the league can be found here.
