Westmoreland campus clippings: Former GCC standout Stawovy hired as women's assistant basketball coach at Washington & Lee

Greensburg Central Catholic grad Brittany Stawovy was hired as an assistant women’s basketball coach at NCAA Division III Washington & Lee University.

Former Greensburg Central Catholic girls basketball player Brittany Stawovy was hired as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Division III Washington & Lee in Lexington, Va.

Stawovy coached the last two years at Kenyon after two years as a graduate assistant at Division II Seton Hill, where she earned a master’s degree.

“I am incredibly excited to join Washington & Lee as the new assistant women’s basketball coach,” Stawovy said in a news release. “I am deeply grateful to coach Brittney Kemp and the entire athletic department for the opportunity to work with such a talented group of student-athletes. It’s an honor to be part of a program with a strong tradition of success, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Stawovy played college basketball at Division II West Virginia Wesleyan.

AAU also appears on her coaching resume. She was the eighth-grade head coach for Erudite Basketball and served as an assistant for the Western PA Bruins.

Softball

Bloomsburg: Senior pitcher Callie Sowers (Hempfield) and senior catcher Emma Little (Penn-Trafford) were battery mates to remember in the PSAC East.

The pair helped the Huskies go four games deep into the NCAA Division II Tournament before the team finished at 33-21.

Sowers finished the season with a 14-7 record, a 2.21 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 129 strikeouts and 42 walks in 130 innings.

Sowers was 72-39 with a 2.38 ERA, 85 complete games, 18 shutouts, and 828 K’s in 715 2/3 career innings.

Little batted .346 with a team-high 14 doubles, 10 homers and 47 RBIs. In 191 career games, she hit .312 with 162 hits, 25 homers and 141 RBIs.

Maine: Freshman shortstop Bailey Snowberger (Norwin) was named to the America East Conference All-Rookie Team.

She had a .273 average with eight doubles and a home run heading into the conference tournament and had started all 46 regular-season games.

Marist: Grad pitcher Kiley Myers (Latrobe) was named Most Outstanding Player for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference for the second year in a row as the Red Foxes won their fifth conference title and second in three years.

Myers improved to an exceptional 22-1 as she scattered five hits and allowed two earned runs over five innings in a 10-2 win over Siena in the title game.

She also was named to the all-tournament team.

Next up is the NCAA Tournament for Myers and Marist (47-7-1).

Ohio: Senior Emma Hoffner (Hempfield) ripped a two-run single in the top of the seventh to lift the Bobcats to a 5-2 win over Miami of Ohio in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

Hoffner was named to the all-tournament team. The Bobcats went 2-2 in the bracket to close out the season at 37-19.

Hoffner, who started 165 of 171 career games, hit .286 this season with 12 doubles, four homers and a career-high 48 RBIs. She finished with 12 homers and 109 RBIs.

Penn State: Senior Haylie Brunson (Mt. Pleasant) was named to the All-Big Ten second team.

Brunson started all 52 games and hit .345 with 13 doubles, 12 home runs and 49 RBIs.

The Nittany Lions (25-27) reached the Big Ten quarterfinals.

For her career, Brunson hit 24 homers and drove in 113, playing two years at Pitt and two at Penn State.

Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats captured their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship, pushing past No. 1 seed Penn State Altoona, 5-1, in the title game.

Freshman Madyson Hart (Mt. Pleasant) doubled, tripled and drove in two runs to pace the offense, and senior ace Melanie Mienke allowed three hits and no earned runs over 6 2/3 innings to earn the win.

The Bobcats (21-17) knocked off No. 2 seed Mount Aloysius before beating Penn State Altoona twice to claim the title.

UPG will take on Trine in the NCAA opener at 11 a.m. on Thursday (36-5) in Angola, Ind.

Robert Morris: Redshirt junior outfielder Courtney Poulich (Mt. Pleasant) was named MVP of the Horizon League Championship.

She hit three home runs in as many tournament games and raised her season total to 15 homers as the Colonials (30-16) won the conference title.

Poulich was named to the All-Horizon League first team.

Senior Jess Matheny (Southmoreland) was named to the second team.

Poulich, carried her breakout season in the playoffs.

She was leading the league in slugging percentage (.741), home runs (12) and RBIs (47). She was hitting .333 with 45 hits and 39 runs.

Matheny had a .298 average with 37 hits, including six homers and 10 doubles, 37 RBIs and 28 runs.

Seton Hill: Senior second baseman Brooklyn Fukushima was selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region first team.

Fukushima led the Griffins with a .407 batting average and 13 stolen bases and had 11 doubles, eight homers and 37 RBIs.

Westminster: Freshman Cheyenne Piper (Ligonier Valley) led the Titans to a PAC championship.

Piper (17-4) posted her ninth shutout of the season, scattering four hits and struck out four in a 7-0 victory over Grove City in the title game.

Senior outfielder Sydney Lokay (Norwin) had a hit in the win.

Westminster (28-11) secured a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament later this week.

Baseball

Cal (Pa.): Junior Luke Treloar (Franklin Regional) earned the win after 1 2/3 innings of relief, and junior Jake Kramer (Hempfield) picked up his 11th save of the season as the Vulcans downed Seton Hill, 3-1, in the PSAC semifinals.

Kramer earlier was named to the All-PSAC West first team.

IUP: Senior Elijah Dunn (Norwin) was named to the All-PSAC West first team.

Dunn had 11 homers and 35 RBIs with a .639 slugging percentage going into the postseason.

He ranks fifth at IUP in career home runs with 22.

Patrick & Henry: Sophomore Dylan Grabowski (Penn-Trafford) was named the Region 10 Player of the Year and also made the All-West Division and All-Region 10 first teams.

Grabowski is slashing .415/.487/.744 and leads the team with 11 home runs and 77 RBIs in 50 games.

He has committed to Division I Liberty.

Penn State Behrend: With an 8-2 win over No. 2 seed Alfred State, the Lions (30-9) won their second consecutive AMCC title and eighth overall.

They advance to play in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Catcher Thomas Nicely (Franklin Regional) drove in two runs in the victory. Nicely has a .374 batting average with a team-high 31 RBIs.

There are four other local players on the roster, including sophomore outfielder Jake Awenowicz (Norwin), sophomore pitcher Evan Del Signore (Penn-Trafford), sophomore outfielder Jake Wessel (Belle Vernon) and freshman pitcher Nate Helphenstine (Norwin).

Wessel has scored four runs, while Helphenstine is 0-1.

Pitt-Greensburg: Juniors Tyler Litts and James Domer were named to the AMCC all-tournament team.

The Bobcats went 1-2 in the tournament to finish the season at 16-19.

Pitt-Johnstown: Redshirt junior Justin Turcovski (Norwin) was named to the All-PSAC West second team.

During the regular season, he led UPJ in just about every offensive category: average (.323), hits (50), runs (29), doubles (7), homers (7), RBIs (28) and slugging (.529).

Saint Vincent: Veteran coach Mick Janosko recorded his 500th career win as the Bearcats pulled past Thiel, 15-12, in 10 innings in the PAC Tournament.

Janosko, who has led the team since 1998, has led the team to 12 20-win seasons.

His overall record is 500-589.

SVC went 1-2 in the bracket to finish the season 19-22.

Seton Hill: The Griffins grabbed two major postseason awards from their conference.

Junior pitcher Ian Korn was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Year, and teammate Brady McGuire won the division’s freshman of the year.

Korn joined four other Griffins on the all-conference first team: sophomore shortstop Owen Henne, junior outfielder Jack Whalen (Norwin), senior pitcher Jon McCullough and sophomore DH Jacob Haynes (Penn-Trafford).

Grad student catcher Mark Black and sophomore pitcher Zach Herb made the second team.

Korn had a 10-1 record with a 1.42 ERA in 11 starts, with 66 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings.

McGuire was hitting .352, Henne had a .379 average with seven homers and 44 RBIs, Whalen was hitting .342 with 50 runs, McCullough was 8-3 with a 1.89 ERA and Haynes had a team-high 12 homers and 25 RBIs.

The Griffins (37-15) went 1-2 in the PSAC Tournament. They learned Sunday they received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. They are the No. 5 seed in the Atlantic Regional and will play No. 4 Cal (Pa.) at 11 a.m. Thursday at Millersville.

It will be their fifth straight trip to the national tournament.

Men’s volleyball

Penn State: Redshirt senior Will Kuhns (Hempfield) hit .421 with 11 kills and nine digs in his final college match, a 3-1 loss to Hawaii in the National Collegiate Championship.

Kuhns became a starter for the first time this season and led the team in kills with 330 and aces with 37.

He ranked second in kills per set (3.14) and digs (140).

Men’s lacrosse

Allegheny: Junior defender Liam Kruck (Franklin Regional) was named to the All-PAC second team.

Saint Vincent: Ten Bearcats earned All-PAC honors. Senior midfielder Justin Wodarek made the first team, while defender Shawn Ryan, junior goalie Garrett Ritts, senior faceoff specialist Brady Beard were picked for the second team.

Honorable mention selections were attackers Jonathan Nagy (junior), Carter Haid (grad) and Liam McCall (junior), senior defender Colton Baker (Hempfield), freshman long-sticker Isaiah Francis (Norwin) and sophomore midfielder Cam Herring.

Washington & Jefferson: Junior midfielder Braden Petrarco (Norwin) and senior Austin Hopkins (Hempfield) were All-PAC honorable mention selections.

Women’s lacrosse

Grove City: Sophomore attacker Gwen Shilling (Franklin Regional) was named to the All-PAC second team.

Through 18 games, she had 43 goals and eight assists for 51 points, third on the team.

Saint Vincent: Junior Carolina Walters (Latrobe) was picked as an All-PAC honorable mention.

Women’s track & field

Clarion: Senior Leah Perry (Derry) finished 15th in the heptathlon with 3,513 points at the PSAC Championships.

Edinboro: Junior Bernadette Zukina (Norwin) broke the PSAC Championships record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.77 seconds to claim the title. It is an NCAA provisional time.

Seton Hill: Senior Haley Brenny was named the PSAC Athlete of the Week. She ran an NCAA provisional time of 1 minute, 33 seconds and won the 400 hurdles at the Slippery Rock Last Chance Meet, giving her the PSAC lead by 2 seconds.

The time is the second best in program history.

Brenny then won the 400 at the PSAC Championships in a time of 59.81 seconds at Slippery Rock.

Slippery Rock: Senior Aleks Brozeski (Norwin) took seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 11.32 meters at the PSAC Championships, hosted by SRU.

Waynesburg: Senior Megan Barry (Norwin) finished second in the javelin at the West Virginia Last Chance meet with a mark of 34.82 meters.

Wrestling

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats have a new head coach.

Colin Johnston was hired to replace Dom Nania (Hempfield), who resigned after two seasons.

Johnston comes to Latrobe after four years as coach at Limestone (S.C.). Before that, he was a head coach at Fairmont State and Pitt-Bradford and served as interim head coach at Davidson.
