Anthony Ferma, a New Kensington firefighter and custodian at Martin Elementary School, put on his full firefighting gear so children would see what he looks like with it on and not be afraid of firefighters should they appear at their homes.

There was a lot of fun, but there also were serious lessons when New Kensington firefighters visited with elementary students last week.

What to do when there’s a fire, how to know there is a fire, and things they shouldn’t do during a fire were among the things assistant Chief Matt Sobecki covered with students at New Kensington-Arnold’s Martin Elementary School, where kindergarten and pre-kindergarten students attend classes.

The visit fell during national Fire Prevention Week.
