Letter to the editor: It's up to us to seek the truth
Honesty and truthfulness are bearings on a good moral compass. They are attributes of a good human being.
“I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts.” — Abraham Lincoln
“Honesty first; then courage; then brains — and all are indispensable.” — Theodore Roosevelt
“The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.” — Winston Churchill
“The effort to strive for truth has to precede all other efforts.” — Albert Einstein
Before you testify in a court of law in the U.S. you are required to take an oath “to tell the truth … .” It is a crime to submit false statements under oath.
When taking office, U.S. representatives, senators and presidents take an oath to uphold the Constitution. They do not take an oath to tell the truth. It is not illegal for our elected officials to lie to the citizens. They are not bound by law to be honest or ethical.
It is up to each citizen to seek the truth.
